truth] WITHOUT FAITH (BELIEF OF GOD’S WORD), IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE HIM.” The Scriptures teach in plain terms that MAN IS MORTAL, subject to death because oi sin, that when death takes place a man ceases to live and from thencelorth IS NOT ALIVE ANYWHERE until the resurrection of the dead. All go to one place at death. The state of the dead is an unconscious state, likened to sleep Many of those now dead will not be the subjects of a resurrection, but- WILL "SLEEP A PERPETUAL SLEEP." At death the spirit, or “life,” RETURNS TO GOD IN EVERY CASE, irrespective of the conduct of the man whilst alive. The body or " dust ” returns to the earth. Whilst spirit or “ life" animates a flesh and blood, dust-formed body, man continues to be " a living soul." In the separation of " spirit ” and “ body,” . or “ life ” and " dust ” at death, THE LIVING SOUL CEASES TO BE. The Scriptures never speak of an “ immortal soul.” “ The life of all flesh is in the blood," but not a “ never-dying soul ” within the body. The word “ immortal ” is found only once in the Bible. The word “ immortality ” is used five times, and neither word is ever applied to man in his present state. Eternal life is never spoken of as a natural element of man, but as the gift of God to be bestowed under certain con - ditions (Rom. v, 12, vi, 23, Eccl. iii, 19-20, Dan. xii, 2, Psa. xlix, 12-20, Isa. xxvi, 13-14, Isa. xliii, 16-17, Eccles. xii, 7, ix, 5-10, Lev. xvii, 11-17, Gen. ii, 7, iii, 19, 1 Tim, i, 17, 1- Cor. xv. 53-54). A mental shock is experienced when brought for the first time into contact with the above truths, and it is natural to hang on to the " liveon never-die ” belief in the immortality of the soul by quoting several passages of Scripture which are looked upon as providing proof. A close examination of them will compel an opposite conclusion, the more so when the investigator is determined to test the accuracy of what is presented. . THE ANIMATION OF MAN by the breath of God no more proves the immortality of the " soul ” THAN THE ANIMATION OF BEASTS AND EVERY CREEPING THING proves the immortality of their “ soul," for it is written, " That which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts even ONE THING BEFALLETH THEM. AS THE ONE DIETH SO DIETH THE OTHER; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man has no pre-emi-nence above a beast" (Eccles. iii, 19). Ot the destruction caused by the flood we read (Gen. vii, 21-22), “AND ALL FLESH DIED that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creening thing that creepetli upon the earth, AND EVERY MAN. All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land died.” FREE " BIBLE TRUTH " LITERATURE Address: Box 857. Dunedin. QUESTIONS INVITED. W. A. DUNCAN
