DAVIS CUP

NO ENTRY NEXT YEAR DECISION OF TENNIS ASSOCIATION PA. WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. Because it was considered that the expenditure involved did not justify sending a team away every year, the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association decided not to enter for the 1948 Davis Cup competition. When this decision was reached at to-night’s meeting, it was pointed out that it was hojaed that an Australian team would visit this country this season. The New Ziealand Lawn Tennis Association also intended to bring down as soon as possible recommendations as to the policy to be followed regarding tours and visits. The chairman of the Management Committee, Mr I. H. MacArthur, said the association still awaited Mr E. D. Andrews’s report as well as the final details of the financial side of the Davis Cup venture last year. At the moment it appeared that the cost of the tour would be about £IOOO. Without these details it would be unwise to commit the association to the cost of another tour. The fund for this purpose was about £3OOO. In any case, he felt it was an expenditure which could not be faced every year. Mr MacArthur said the association had hoped to have received for the meeting definite information regarding the invitation to an Australian side to visit New Zealand, but this was still awaited.
