CROWN VALUERS
TRIBUTES TO FAIRNESS LAND SALES INCIDENT Prior to the opening of a case before the Otago Land Sales Committee yesterday morning in which he was engaged, Mr A. N. Haggitt, who had appeared for the applicant company in a claim for compensation in connection with the acquisition of the Moeraki Estate by the Crown, said that certain remarks attributed to him in the press concerning the Crown valuers might be considered to be a reflection on them. Counsel said that Mr R. Cowie, district farm appraiser for the State Advances Department, had directed his attention to the report. Mr Haggitt emphasised that he had intended no such reflection, and paid ■a tribute to the fair evidence given by the Crown valuers before the committee. , Mr Cowie explained that as a Crown valuer he had always carried out his work in a fair and unbiased manner. “We act for no particular party, and all we are concerned with is to give a fair valuation.” The chairman (Mr C. B. Barrowclough) and the Crown representative (Mr J. R. Hampton) also referred to the fair manner in which the Crown valuers had given their evidence.
