FOREST FIRES
PREVENTION CAMPAIGN EFFECTIVE BOOKLET PROPOSED That fire is “ Public Enemy No. 1 ” is stressed effectively in an attractive booklet which has been issued by the State Forest Service as part of a publicity campaign to stamp, out forest fires. It is intended to send 50,000 of the booklets to schools throughout the country. The art work in the publication was done by Margaret Pearson, a New Zealand girl now living in Sydney, and the material was prepared in cooperation with Roderic McDiarmid, publicity officer of the forest service. The 16 pages of the booklet consist of obvious little hints on fire prevention illustrated cleverly by coloured drawings. It is pointed out that most fires are started through carelessness, and that small fires often lead to big ones. Every conceivable way in which, a fire may originate is shown clearly by the authors. The evil of Erosion is explained effectively, while the discarded cigarette butt and the burning remains of picnic fires are other fire hazards emphasised to the full.
