BEER HANDLES
PRODUCTION STOPPED REPLACEMENT BY GLASSES “ The only beer handles we have are those acquired before the import restrictions came into force in 1939, and the possibility of any being received in the near future is remote,” the Daily Times was informed yesterday by a hotel proprietor in Dunedin. The reporter learned that the manufacture of handles had been discontinued in Australia and 12oz glasses were being made instead None of these glasses had been received in Dunedin for a long time, however, and it was understood that production had been suspended at present because of the shortage of soda ash Unless wholesalers had supplies of these glasses already on the way, none could be expected until about the end of April next year. Explaining the reason for the halt in production of beer 'undies, a wholesaler said yesterday that two 12oz glasses could be made from the material required for one 12oz handle, and the time of manufacture was cut by about 75 per cent. An indefinite period was expected to elapse before stocks of handles could be replenished, so many customers would have to be content with an ordinary glass instead of the “ familiar feel ” of the handle.
