Prospects of Southerners

FINE NIGHT AMONG FANCIES

Three of the first four horses to finish in the Apprentices’ Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday—Fine Night, Spare Part, and Pageantry—are engaged in the Otaio Plate and between them they may collect a large share of the stake.

Fine Night, the top-weight with 9.0, won the Apprentices’ Handicap by staying on and the extra three furlongs are not likely to trouble the Nightly gelding. With a 7.0 minimum, compared with a 7.7 minimum in the Apprentices’ Handicap, Fine Night has 31b more to carry.

Pageantry, who finished fourth in the Apprentices’ Handicap with 9.2, has been dropped 61b and meets Fine Night on 91b better terms. Spare Part, second in the Apprentices’ Handicap with 8.2, has the same weight and meets Fine Night on 31b better terms. Spare Part put up a remarkably good performance last Saturday, his finishing run from a long way back being most impressive. The Stormovik and Great Chum look the most likely to upset calculations, but first day’s form will probably result in Spare Part, Fine Night, and Pageantry being the favourites.
