PEOPLE’S DAY AT SUMMER SHOW

CATTLE i JERSEYS

ENTERTAINING PROGRAMME

Popular . Rendezvous for • Thousands .

Fine weather made the sixty-sixth annual metropolitan show of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society a genuine summer, show. Tahuna Park was the rendezvous for thousands of people from the town and the country yesterday, and by the time shops and offices had closed to permit their staffs to attend the show, a crowd estimated at at least 12,000 was thronging the ground. Trams were packed to the platforms, while traffic officers had a busy and dusty directing hundreds of cars into the parking places.

The rrforning was warm but overcast, but fears that a change to a southerly wind would bring rain later in the day were dispelled when the sun broke through just, when the spectacular grand parade was in progress. There was plenty to see, for representatives of the province’s best stock were in the pens, an entertaining programme of field events had been arranged, and side-show alley was offering a garish selection of oddities and amusements.

The judging was completed in good time, and the marshals had the grand parade moving out around the ring at the scheduled hour. The noteworthy entry in the Clydesdale classes, to- . gether with the man# contestants in the light horse and pony classes, ensured that the parade would be well worth seeing, the entries being well turned out.

The Mayor, Mr Cameron, spoke briefly over the ever-active public ad- . dress system after the parade, congratulating the society on the excellent display and wishing it every success in its activities. Mr Cameron was accompanied by Captain M.. B. Laing, C.8.E., R.N., of H.KS. Bellona. A baseball match between two of the town’s leading teams was the feature of the carnival in the evening. SHEEP CORRIEDALES The Bushey Park Estate maintained its usual high standard in the Corriedale section, commented the judge, Mr H. B. Mclndoe. of Gore. There was strong competition among the ewe hoggets, in which some very nice wooiied sheep were shown. Mr P. J. The champion dog in the show was Mrs G. Phillips's Pomeranian, Loehleven GOia Premium, which the judge, Mr T. V. Cooke, of Timaru, considered to be an outstanding entrant. The show was capably managed by the committee and the ring was well fed with entrants throughout the judging, which occupied over six hours. The best class of entries was among the cocker spaniels, where the special prize for the best dog, other than mack, was won by Mr J. Dawson with Sympathy of Norglen. The judge said that some of the cockers were a little coarse and needed more preparation, but that, in general, the standard was good.
