COMMUNIST INFLUENCE
SAVOY HOTEL STRIKE
RALLY TO PICKET LINES N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent
Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 26. The industrial correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says there are indications that the Communists are taking a very active part in prolonging the Savoy Hotel strike. Each evening civil servants, school teachers and persons from a score of other professions and trades which have no connection with the strike are joining the ranks of the pickets. Many of these people are known to be active Communists.
Appeals for more pickets and other assistance for the strikers are being made by organisations under Communist influence. The chanting of Communist slogans and other publicityseeking demonstrations, which were features of previous Communist demonstrations, have also been introduced. Although the National Union of General and Municipal Workers, which includes the catering trades, has officially recognised the Savoy strike, the union has not asked for sympathetic action from other unions. The secretary of the union, Mr Tom Williamson, M.P., said it was anxious not to introduce a political element into what was purely an industrial dispute.
