HOUSING FIRST
MAYOR’S ADDRESS TO CITY COUNCIL
PROBLEMS TO BE FACED “ I am aware of the difficulties with the supply of housing material and other aspects of building houses at present, but I would recommend the council to give priority to the consideration of housing, and to do all we can to provide houses, which the people so much need,” said the Mayor, Mr Cameron, in his introductory address to the members of the recentlyelected City Council at a statutory meeting yesterday when discussing the problems to be faced during the next three years, and explaining some aspects of policy.. .... “The citizens have chosen you to be their directors and to conduct the affairs of the city for the ensuing three •years,” Mr Cameron said. “You will have many difficult problems to consider arid decisions to make,” the Mayor continued. These included the transport position (principally the financial aspect), the water supply, electricity development at Waipori, the new highway to the hill suburbs and the opening up of the Kaikorai Valley area, and an Olympic pool. But, first of all, said the Mayor, he was desirous that the council would do everything possible to launch a housing scheme as quickly as conditions would allow. “ We are entering on centennial year, and it is our duty to honour the pioneers, but we cannot live in the past,” said Mr Cameron. “In our day and generation we must make our contribution to the welfare of the city, and we must show that same vision, faith and courage as our pioneers did, and not be satisfied with past or present attainments, but plan boldly for the future development of our city and province.”
