COMPETITIONS SOCIETY
Next Year’s Festival
Mr V. E. Doran presided at a meeting of the executive of the Oamaru Competitions Society. The schedule for the festival, to be held from May 17 to 22, 1948, was adopted. The schedule provides for 110 classes, an increase on that of the recent festival. The elocution, vocal, instrumental and fancy dress dancing classes provide the increase. Prize money and medals of a total value of nearly £BS were authorised. It was decided that entries for the festival should close on March 20.
The society acknowledged with thanks the donation by Messrs T. Bracken and Company of the Thomas Bracken Cup for highest aggregate points in three sections of elocution, and by Mrs M. Watson of a Challenge Cup for character dance for girls under eight years. Mrs Myra Chase also contributed prize money for first and second in the class, “A Modern British Art Song." The recommendation of the sub-com-mittee that the following judges be appointed was approved:—Miss Jean Miller (Dunedin), national and fancy dancing: Mrs M. O’Sullivan (Christchurch), elocution classes; Dr Vernon T. Griffiths (Christchurch), vocal and instrumental classes; Mr C. L. Sutherland (Oamaru), pipe music.
The need for a strong membership was emphasised, and it was decided to make an appeal to all interested citizens to become members of the society.
