VALIDITY CHALLENGED
UNIFORM TAXATION SYSTEM MELBOURNE, Nov. 22. The Victorian Government is preparing to challenge in the High Court the validity of uniform taxation. The Attorney-general, Mr Oldham, said the Government had retained leading
constitutional lawyers to decide what steps it should take to seek the abolition of the uniform tax system.
The Premier, Mr Hollway, said a meeting of non-Labour Premiers in Melbourne on Monday would discuss plans to challenge uniform taxation, as well as the nationalisation of banking. Mr Hollway said his Government believed the question should be
taken to the Privy Council if necessary. “ The new Victorian Government is anxious to have taxation restored to the States. I am confident other non-Labour Governments would join Victoria in fighting this egregious fraud.” Uniform taxation was introduced as a war-time measure, and has been retained by the Commonwealth as a peace-time measure.
