WORK ON WATERFRONT
TWO-SHIFT SYSTEM PROPOSED P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 25.
With the object of encouraging a swifter turnround of ships, a proposal for the introduction of a two-shift system of work on the New Zealand waterfront has been submitted to the Waterfront Industry Commission by the Aid to Britain Council. The commission is arranging to meet representatives of the employers and the Watersiders’ Union to discuss the suggestion. The proposal is in the preliminary stages, and the question of the hours for the operation of the suggested twoshift system will be one of the matters for discussion.
“The proposal is nebulous at the moment,” was an official comment today, “and there are no opinions on it one way or the other. It is certainly not being urged at this junc T ture.”
The operation of the scheme, it was pointed out, would require approval of the workers, and much would depend on the amount of labour available. At times on the main waterfronts, labour has not been sufficient to meet immediate needs, it was further mentioned.
