BELLONA ARRIVES
FIRST VISIT TO DUNEDIN LARGE CROWD ON WHARF H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona arrived at Dunedin yesterday at 1.45 P-m----first visit to this port The cruiser, which left Lyttelton at 4.30 p.m on Monday, berthed at Birch street wharf where she will remain until she leaves for Akaroa early on M As dE the warship steamed into the basin, her personnel were at stations for entering port. The cruiser slid smoothly towards her berthage and a thin rope was. thrown to the whan and a heavier line followed to which was attached a steel cable which was made fast. Other mooring lines were tossed ashore and the ship was quickly secured. There was a large crowd on the wharf and sailors were soon engaged in conversation with friends and relatives. Official Calls' The Mayor,. Mr Cameron, stepped aboard shortly before 3 p.m. to pay his official call on-Captain M. B. Lamg, the commanding officer, and he was followed by representatives of the Otago Harbour Board. Captain Laing returned these calls later in the afternoon.
To-dav, the Bellona will be open to the public from 1.30-to 5 p.m., and the ship will again be open for inspection between the same hours on Saturday and Sunday. Although a strict training schedule will be observed, ; a large number of men will be on leave each day and a programme of entertainment has been prepared for-them. Unfortunately, the cricket match which was planned for to-day has had to be postponed and the water polo matches will be held later. Children under Heritage sponsorship and from the orphanages -will be entertained at a party aboard the Bellona on Friday afternoon. It is proposed to cater for 500 children.
