SERVICE REWARDED

SIR R. HEATON RHODES THE ORDER OF ST. JOHN In honour of his service to the commandery in its early days in New Zealand, Sir Heaton Rhodes was invested with the insignia of Baili.fi, Grand Cross*of the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem, by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, at a private ceremony at his residence, “Otahuna.” This was the first time that the black ribbon and white crosses of the rank have been

presented in New Zealand, as Sir Heaton Rhodes is the first person outside Great Britain to receive the honour. Only eight persons in the world can hold it at one time. Among those who witnessed the investiture were relatives of Sir Heaton Rhodes and Mr B. J. McKenna (chairman) and Colonel P. H. Morey (brigade commissioner), who represented the Order of St. John. Dr A. R. Falconer, of Dunedin, represented the Order in Otago. Sir Heaton has been associated with the Order for about 50 years, and has held the ranks of Knight Commander (the first in New Zealand) and Knight of Justice. He is now entitled to place his banner and arms in the Church of the Chapter General, London
