TRADE UNION CONFERENCES
SUBJECTS FOR DISCUSSION THIS WEEK p.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. Two important trade union conferences will begin in Wellington this week. The first is the biennial conference to-morrow of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, and the second is that of the National Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, opening on Wednesday. A considerable part of the business of the federation meeting will be on wages and prices, regarding which there were many representations from affiliated organisations, and a declaration of policy concerning another wage increase is expected to be made. It is expected that the superannuation scheme for members of Parliament will also be discussed. The watersiders’ conference, at which two delegates of the Australian Waterside Workers’ Federation are expected, will probably last.lo days. The watersiders will discuss current economic and political issues, and the meeting 'will hold special interest in view of the Honolulu conference in January between representatives of the maritime organisations of the Pacific countries. The union will also consider the question of advising the natives of South Pacific islands on the question of improving their social and economic conditions.
