IMPROVED ROADS
SEALING OPERATIONS CENTRAL OTAGO HIGHWAYS The time when the motorists will be able to drive on tar-sealed roads beDunedin and the tourist resorts of Central Otago is being brought a stage nearer as a result of highway improvements at present being carried out on the Milton-Queenstown and CromwellWanaka highways. Nearly 20 miles of new sealing will have been completed by Christmas and further stretches will be sealed early in the coming year. A general improvement in Central Otago roads should be noticeable to holiday motorists this summer. One of the sections that has been greatly improved recently is the road between Lowburn and Queensberry, on the Cromvvell-Wanaka highway. Four miles of the road has already been sealed and a further three miles and a-half will be done before Christmas. Another section which is receiving attention lies between Alexandra and Gorge Creek. Eleven miles have been sealed, although half a mile east of the traffic bridge has been left metalled, as a change in the highway will be made when a new bridge is built over the Molyneux at Alexandra. The sealing of this 11 miles is not a finished job, but it will be sufficient to provide a good surface and stop the dust nuisance on a section that has always drawn complaints from motorists. Practically from Glenore to Ettrick improvements to ’the main highway are being carried out. Work is in progress on the section between Ettrick and Island Block, and from Clarksville to Glenore the road is being built up and improved. The work of installing piping and metalling on the Glenore-Waitahuna section is proceeding satisfactorily and a section of the road will be sealed after Christmas. Another improvement has been the elimination of two of a group of three bridges in the Manuka Gorge. Improvements set down for the New. Year include the sealing of two miles at Gibbston and three miles and ahalf at Frankton. These are sections of the Cromwell-Queenstown highway that called for early improvement.
