SEASONAL WORK

EARLY LEAVE FOR PUPILS NOT FAVOURED BY BOARD The Otago High Schools’ Board, acting on a request by the rector of the Otago Boys’ High School, Mr H. P. Kidson, yesterday reaffirmed its policy of not granting leave to pupils wishing to undertake seasonal work prior to the closing of the • school for the vear. The chairman, Mr W. R.Brugh, said that, during the war, leave had been granted in approved cases because of the shortage of labour. As war conditions no longer applied leave would not be granted before the end of the term unless parents living in the country could show that they were unable to do without the boys. It was decided to close schools under the board’s jurisdiction during Carnival Week (February '23 to 28). It was further resolved that -schools be granted a half-holiday on Show Day, November 26. Congratulations were, extended to Miss L. A. Currie, of the Girls’ High School, who has been selected for exchange with Miss H. Armitage, of Maidstone,. England, next year. It was reported that Mr W. F. Reid, of the Otago Boys’ High School, had also been chosen for exchange, but that his English vis-a-vis had withdrawn his application. ■ : ’ ~ • ’
