STOCK AND PRODUCE
EXHIBITS OF HIGH QUALITY The wealth of the agricultural and pastoral holdings of North Otago was once again reflected yesterday in the display of stock and produce at Br.e North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s eighty-third annual show. The entries were not quite up to last year’s figures, but the splendid season enjoyed in North Otago was indicated by the sleek appearance of the stock, which combined with the high-quality breeding for which the district is noted, made a fine display in the grand parade. In common with most other shows in recent years, particular attention was focused on the ring events, and the hacks and hunters provided a class in which there were no fewer than 109 competitors, many of whom had more than one horse under their charge. Competition was not strong in the sheep section, but the quality was good, especially in the fat classes. The standard attained in the dairy cattle sections was also very high, and the champion cow in Jerseys, exhibited by Messrs Portis Bros., would rank high against the best competition at a Royal Show. There was a good selection in the pig classes, but the judge commented that # the Large Blacks were not suitable for export to England, and farmers of the district had a fine lot to choose from in the other three breeds. The weather was fine, though overcast at times, and a little cold, but there was the usual large attendance of both town and country folk, who enjoyed the ring events to the full as well as the wide variety of side-shows and trade exhibit's. The North Otago Highland Pipe Band was in attendance to lead the grand parade. During the afternoon crowds visited the pavilion to see probably the finest display ever given in a North Otago Show. The gate takings were £460 £1 less than last year’s. Awards:— SHEEP Border Leicester Judge: Mr J. A. Miller (Outram) Ram.—lß months and over: P. J. Callaghan 1 and 2, J. D. Reid 3.
