CHESS HONOURS
BLEDISLOE CUP MATCH OTAGO PLAYERS’ SUCCESS For the first time since 1938, the Otago chess team has won the Bledisloe Cup, for competition between the 'four main centres. As South and North Island finalists, Otago and Wellington began their match in August, but several games were incomplete, and the final result has just-been announced. The local team-wbh by 10j to point on the first five boards, but the remainder of the team made up the leeway to gain a one-point victory. Each team was composed of 20 players, and each player had",his opposite number, the games being prayed by telegraph. A direct line was maintained between Wellington and Dunedto during the playing of the games, every move being interchanged by separate telegrams. The Bledisloe Cup tournament is run on a knock-out system between the four main centres The North Island finalists are decided between Auckland and Wellington and the South Island between Christchurch and Dunedin.
The New Zealand chess championships will be held in Dunedin, beginning on Boxing Day. Already a number of entries have been received, 19 coming from the North Island. The games will be played over the board, and the programme will consist of the main New Zealand championship, a major open tournament, and one or more first-class tournaments.
