STRONG POSITION

PATRIOTIC FUNDS COUNCIL’S ANNUAL MEETING A highly satisfactory financial position was revealed at the annual general meeting of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council held in the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. The Mayor, Mr Cameron, presided over a large attendance. Statement of Accounts The statement of accounts,' submitted by the honorary treasurer, Mr R. A. Johnston, showed that the total receipts for the year were £BBOS 12s lud compared with £28,425 Is 4d for 194546. The principal item was income from investments £8684 9s 9d as against £8237 Is 5d received, last year. The increase was accounted for by the realisation of Bomber Bonds, which cost £5027 12s 6d, and matured at £5745. The payments -for the year totalled £15,844 16s Id, made up by grants and expenditure for patriotic purposes £14,097 15s 9d, cost of operations £75 7s 4d, cost of administration £1224 6s, refund to Patriotic Fund Board £443 10s, and sundry item £3 17s. The Relief Committee expended £12,969 8s 5d during the year against £19,826 13s lid last year. The £IOOO paid to the Y.M.C.A. represented the grant authorised; by the council on December 3, 1946. . It was explained that the account was now divided into.' two sections only—general fund and services’ and dependants’ -fund —£1394 15s and £6058 2s 4d respectively. In the services’ and dependants’ section the income from investments, £8052 8s Bd, was sufficient to meet nearly twothirds of the amount paid out in grants. Depreciation had been charged in respect to the council’s property at Port Chalmers, office, furniture, etc. The 'item shown as grants included the £IOOO paid to the Y.M.C.A., and the grant of £2OO to the Disabled Servicemen’s Bowling Club, authorised in Sep- ' tember. - • The assets at the end of the year. ; after allowing for depreciation of pro'perty, totalled £267,262, a decrease of £7638 12s 4d on last year’s figures. The balance at the bank was shown at £12,153 2s Id, but £SOOO , had since been withdrawn for the Relief Committee. Government stock rmaturing during the year reduced the balance of that account by .£l9B, while maturing Bomber Bonds reduced the National Savings account by £5027 12s 6d On the liabilities side the fund accounts had been, reduced to general and services and dependants - by the incorporation of the balances standing in the UNRRA, Lady Galway Guild, Sick and Wounded and Gift Parcels Fund Accounts. . , „„„„ On the motion of Mr Jamesp Hogg, seconded by Mr Edgar Hazlett, the report was received pending an audit of the accounts. « _ • Relief Committee

The annual report of the Relief Committee showed that 3098 applications had been received during the year, 2909 amounting to a total of £13,077 13s lid having been granted. Mr W. G. Kindley, who presented the report, paid a tribute to the work of the committee, stating that he had received the greatest co-operation from all the members. Of : this ’number 420 had been granted, involving -an expenditure of £1799 16s. 6d Received,' ,J----ATetter \was received from the. Dunedin branch fo the 2nd 1 N.Z:E.F. Association requesting representation or the Relief Committee. Mr Kindley said it. could be assumed that 90 per cent, of the membership of the Returned Services’. Association consisted 'of: second war members.—The application '-was'.;deferred' after the secretary (Mr A. E. Russell) had pointed out that under the new constitution of the council the 2nd N.Z.E.F. would be entitled to representation. -
