NEW COMET BESTER
OBSERVED IN DUNEDIN The new comet, officially known as comet 1947 K, which was discovered by Mr Bester of the Harvard University Observatory, Boyden Station, Bloemfontein, was observed on Monday night at the Berry Thomson Observatory by Mr D. ,C. Berry. . ' , At tne present time it is close to the first magnitude star Achenar in the constellation of Eridanis. It is a faint elongated coma with no visible tail, and is of about the tenth visual magnitude, and slowly brightening. Passing clouds interferred with attempts to photograph it. Mr Jones, of Timaru, ’ has been following this comet for some weeks and now that it is far enough south to be seen all night it is expected that many useful observations will be made. . The periodic comet Encke is now approaching perihelion and is rather close to the eastern horizon at dawn. So far it has eluded New Zealand astronomers.
