EXCITING FINISH IN SYDNEY

MATCH AGAINST AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN Rec. 10 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 18. The Indian cricket team to-day defeated an Australian eleven by 47 runs, thus gaining the first win of its tour. In an exciting firiish in which Australia chased, runs recklessly seeking a win. India won with half-an-hour to spare. There was a sensational and unprecedented incident during the afternoon when the Indian bowler Mankad ran out Brown at the bowler’s end. Earlier, Mankad had stopped in his approach to the bowling crease and warned Brown against backing up too far. Two overs later Mankad stopped in his run and lifted the bails with Brown about two feet out of his crease. Intent on saving the game, the Indians batted in determined fashion. Only 14 runs were added in the first half-hour for the loss of Rangnekar's wicket. W. Johnston at one stage bowled six overs for four runs and one wicket. The seventh wicket partnership of 55 runs by Adhikari and Kishenchand, made India safe. Adhakari was in 125 minutes for his 46. Kishenchand and Sohoni put on 57 runs for the ninth wicket. The former, who scored 75 in the first innings, completed a fine double with 63 not out. It was a chanceless innings occupying 135 minutes.

Australia was set the task of making 251 runs in 150 minutes when Amarnath declared India’s innings closed at nine for 304. The Australians

went for the runs. Brown and Rogers made 60 in 36 minutes and then both were out in quick succession. Miller swung wildly and hit 6’s before he was stumped. Bradman and the others continued to chase runs and wickets fell rapidly. When seven wickets were down for 130. Mankad had the grand figures of six for 45. and a run-out to his credit. Dooland hit two G’s in making 31 in 29 minutes. The tail-enders also swung gamely, but the Indian attack, spearheaded by Amarnath, was too steady and Australia fell short after making 203 in 11? minutes.
