GLOOMY PROPHET

“WAR IN FOUR MONTHS" VIEWS OF AMERICAN ' WASHINGTON, Nov. 14. “ Betting abroad ” is that the United States and Russia will be at war in four months, said Representative Everett M. Dirksen (Republican, Illinois) to-day. Mr Dirksen, who is chairman of the special- Joint Armed Services Appropriations Committee, which surveyed conditions in Europe, Said: “They (meaning ‘pretty well informed people ’) are willing to bet at even odds ‘ over there ’ that there will be war between our country and Russia in four months.” The European views on the imminence of war as reported by Mr Dirksen contrast sharply with the opinions of General Eisenhower, army chief of staff, and Admiral Chester Nimitz, chief of naval operations, who said earlier this week that they saw no likelihood of war in the near future.
