MILK QUALITY
GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE LOCAL BOARD HAMSTRUNG “ The Metropolitan Milk Board is a son of the Socialist Government in Wellington. We did not want it—it was foisted on to us and we had to appoint four members,” said Mr L. M. Wright at the Concert Chamber last night, commenting on a Labour Party advertisement which had implied criticism of the work of the council nominees on the Milk Board. “ Those men were aflpohited because milk'‘is far too important an item to let the drones plav around with. “ On that board we have been sidetracked and we have been hamstrung by the Kremlin in Wellington, but we have done the best possible. As a matter of fact, there is ,not so much that the board is able to do—-the whole affair is run from Wellington, he continued. “ The ..Labour Party is claiming to stand for truth in advertising. I do not like to see truth twisted around like a dog’s tail in the way that they are doing with their talk about the milk, as with other matters.”- . . The question of milk quality was also touched on by Mr L. J. Ireland, who stated that it was not the slightest use the Labour candidates saying that if the people made a complete tie-up between a Labour Council and a Labour Government better milk would be received. “In 1945, when milk was in short supply, one distributor was pulled up for supplying milk which was below standard.” he said. “And yet one of the officials of the Central Milk Council in Wellington authorised the distribution of that sub-standard milk.”
