HEAVY DAY OF FIRE CALLS
A fire in the basement of the Social Security Department’s building at the corner of Bond and High streets, thought to have been caused by a cigarette butt, received the attention of the Central brigade, but the fire was put out without any damage resulting. A chimney fire in Helena street was given attention by a South Dunedin machine at 10.51 a.m. At 11.22, a grass fire in Anzac avenue, near the railway line, was extinguished by the central brigade and another grass fire in the vicinity of the Caversham tunnel had a South Dunedin machine out at 12.50 p.m. The central brigade turned out in full force in response to a call to Duke street at -2.3 p.m., but it was only a rubbish fire. At 5.19 there was a fire in the bush and scrub near Newington avenue and Queen’s Drive, Maori Hill, to which machines from the central and Roslyn brigades were called.
