The Citizens' Association replies. WANTED—MILK WHO CONTROLS THE MILK BOARD? In reply to recent Labour Party Propaganda, we feel that we cannot do better than to reproduce in full Mr. J. H. Hinton s letter in Saturday's Evening Star headed " LABOUR AND MILK QUALITY Sir, —The Labour Party’s latest advertising stunt under, the heading “ The Woman’s Viewpoint,” informs us that “ women good milk that will keep.” The inference behind the statement is, of course, that the Metropolitan Milk Board is not doing its job. As a member of the hoard, I would like the Labour Advertising Committee and the electors to know that since the hoard was appointed it has been so much tied up with red tape that members often wonder what they are there for. IT’c are being forced into socialisation of the milk business, whether we like it or not, and all major decisions are made by the all-powerful Milk Council in Wellington. 1 The inspection ’is just chaotic. No. 1 Department is only allowed to enter the farm gate; No. 2 inspectors work from farm to depot; while No. 3 inspects from depot to consumer. One inspector cannot enter another department’s territory. The Milk Board us at present constituted is nothing more than a glorified licensing authority, and any alteration in the present inspection system can only he done by the departments concerned in Wellington. There can he no doubt that the blame for to-day’s poor quality milk rests entirely with the Government. The socialistic experiment should haw commenced at the cow shed and not at the factory. I can assure you that members of the Milk Board are just as fed up with the present milk situation as consumers are, and for Labour advertisements to try to lay the blame elsewhere than at the door of their own party is just sheer ignorance or a great big hoax. Should any Labour councillors be unforunate enough to be elected on to the Milk Board early next year, I hope they will pul a bit more work into this committee than they have during the past three years on various committees of the City Council.—l am, etc., . J. H. HINTON, St. Kilda representative, Metropolitan Milk Board. (This advertisement is inserted by the Dunedin Citizens' Assn.)
