NOTES ON THE RUNNING
PATMOS BRILLIANT Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Nov. 16,
Salmon Spear was backed down to an odds-on price for the Southland Handicap. He secured the run of the race but he needed everything in his favour as he had nothing to spare from Aganev. Hansel and Good Cast made the running to the straight, with Salmon Spear trailing them Once in line for home Salmon Spear came through on the inner and just as he looked an easy winner Aganev arrived on the scene. She finished with a fine run, but failed by a nose in a photo finish to gather him. Aganev’s effort was an outstanding one, as she was last in the middle stages and had a lot of ground to make up. {-oyal Lady, who was last into the straight, finished on better than anything to get up for third. Boolamskee had every chance, but dropped out ai the home turn. Grill came in for some solid support, but he was always well back in the field and finished a poor sixth. Hansel, one of the pacemakers, was last. The Sprint Patmos beat a big field of sprinters in the Taramoa Handicap in brilliant style. She was one of the smartest to jump out and after disputing the lead with Luminous Knight to the straight, she soon had him beaten off. Patmos carried on to win with something in hand. Black Light, who was badly placed in the middle stages, finished with a late run to get up for second ahead of Air Ace, who also put in some telling work over the last couple of furlongs. Bath Slipper was beaten into fourth place in a photo finish. Luminous Knight dropped right out, and Wild Cry gave ground at the straight entrance, where he was well placed. Wantwood and Nigger Lad finished right up behind the placed horses aftpr being a long way back early Special* Flight missed the jump out and was not sighted. Sea Power ran a good race to the straight, where he stopped Pensacola, who had every chance, failed to justify the support which came foi him Stewart Island Handicap Pageantry was permitted to go out at a false price of better than double figures In the Stewart Island Handicap and he won all the way He fought off a strong challenge by Grand Pal over the last furlong, and his effort was a particularly good one. Spare Part, who finished third, ran a great race under difficulties. He was badly checked at the end of a furlong and went right back through his field He made a game effort to overhaul the two leaders in the run home and did well to get within a length of the winner. Sir Raimond was closer at the finish than at any other stage and Renege had every chance. She was not disgraced in finishing fourth. Beaugard did well to be sixth after being at the rear in the middle stages. Takitimu Handicap Doulton came into his own against the hack sprinters in the Takitimu Handicap. He was fifth into the straight and finished with a fine run over the last furlong to get up and beat Geisha Girl. Duvaals finished strongly on the rails to cut the favourite. Full Play, out of third.
