THE CUP MEETING
SOUTHLAND CONTINGENT Special to the Dally Times INVERCARGILL, Nov. 16. Southland candidates with engagements at the Nq.w Zealand Cup meeting are to be taken through to Riccarton to-morrow. R. E. McLellan will take Signal Officer, Pageantry and Aganev; J. Thistleton, Desert Girl; F. W. Ellis, Salmon Spear and Eriskay; and T. E. Pankhurst, Beaugard, Gipsy Major, Spare Part and Wantwood. K. R. Ford has been offered the mount on Desert Girl in the Stewards’. After the last race at the Southland meeting yesterday Signal Officer, ridden by his New Zealand Cup rider, R. J. Mackie, was galloped a mile and a-quarter on his own on the course proper. After running the first half in 54 3-ssec, he completed the journey in 2mm 11 4-ssec, the last mile in lmin 43 3-ssec, the last six in lmin 17 l-ssec, and the last half in 50 2-ssec. Signal Officer is in great order, and he will not fail in the Cup on the score of condition.
