RECORD ATTENDANCE

Taieri Agricultural Show at Outram

EXCELLENT LIGHT HORSES

Sunny weather, a record attendance of the public, and entries from Invercargill to Palmerston, including a record entry of ponies, contributed to the success of the Taieri Agricultural Society’s eighty-sixth annual show at Outram on Saturday. A special train brought a full load of passengers from Dunedin and intermediate stations. According to the official count, almost 600 motor cars were on the ground. The West Taieri Brass Band was in attendance, and a grand parade of stock and horses was held in the afternoon.

The organisation was a credit to the society, and the concluding events were completed on time. An energetic band of officials was headed by the president, Mr J. A. Miller, and the secretary, Mr W. T. Snow. The vice-president, Mr John Sutherland, who is the oldest living past-president, having held office in 1911, and who will be president again next year for the centenary of the province, had a busy day drafting stock.

Reflecting the advantageous effects of a favourable climatic season, the stock generally were in excellent show condition —a marked contrast with last year, when the weather was consistently wet and cold. The light horse and pony classes received the greatest support. The horses were an outstanding lot, and the riders revealed a high degree of proficiency, the task of the judges being difficult. The home industries were well supported and the exhibitors set a high standard in cookery, preserves, and butter-making. This was the first show of the 1947-48 series in Otago and Southland, and the support accorded it augurs well for the show season.
