PASTURES AND CROPS

WEATHER FAVOURABLE FOR GROWTH PEAS IN CENTRAL OTAGO The weather in Otago during the past week has been favourable for the growth of pastures generally and cereal crops are now well forward. With the arrival of the freighter Inchwells at this port Fuflicient fowl wheat should be available for the next month or so. The market for oats lcmains bare. Although the North Island is still a strong buyer there is no surplus, and the few oats that are held will all be required for horse and fowl feed. Dun oats and Algerians will be needed for autumn sowing. Although there is no surplus of table potatoes at present, sufficient are available to keep the local market supplied, and this should be the case until the new potatoes come in more freely. The large area of peas sown in Central Otago this season got away lo a good start and if conditions remain suitable it is expected that yields should be good. A steady demand exists from the country for small seeds and these are going steadily to the farmers. The export market remains quiet, with an odd inquiry for white clover, Montgomery, browntop and ryegrass, both perennial and uncertified. These inquiries, however are not of sufficient value to alter the market, and prices, in the main, are unchanged.
