SOUTH ISLAND SHIPMENT BANANAS AND ORANGES NEXT WEEK The Mahana is expected at P°>t Chalmers to-day with 2 °oo cases of pme for the South Island. Ot shipment, the local portion will he about 480 cases, and the balance will be “ _ tributed from Invercargill to Christ The Waimarino is expected toward the middle of next week with approximately 1400 cases of Samoan bananas. d The Waitaki is also expected toward the middle of next week, and the latest information is that she is cairying small quantity qf oranges. The market in Dunedin has been baie of lemons for some time, and it.is n yet known in the city whether the Wai taki has any consignments. , Hothouse tomatoes from Canterbury, Nelson and local hothouses continued to be received on the Dunedin ™arket week and prices were well maintained, with a slight reduction at the week-end Gooseberries are increasing in supp y. very small sizes being difficult to place. Cherries are coming forward in small lots from Ceijtral Otago but the qualltv is on the poor side and tne fruit are very small. satisfactory prices arc being obtained. Small lots of strawberries coming. to hand arc selling well. The season for strawberries and cherries is several weeks earlier than it was last year. Passion fruit and tree tomatoes are offering in small lots from the lNOilh Island. New Zealand S.rapenm ha little inquiry, tne sizes being small one. most of the fruit in poor condition No apples or pears were received on the Dunedin market this week ana > - now seems that the season is finished. Green peas are increasing m suppg. and prices yesterday were on the low side. The peas appeared to have been picked wet and were in a very heated condition on arrival. . Broad beans are in good supply, ana prices are low. , . . Lettuces have been in over-supply, but small quantities at the week-end caused the market to advance. Cabbages are plentiful and prices low. Cauliflowers are in short supply. New potatoes from Nelson and small quantities from Waimate are now offering. Oamaru growers are hoping to begin digging in about a week’s time. Here, again the season is much earlier than last year, when late frosts retarded crops. Rhubarb has a good inquiry. Leeks are in over-supply with sales almost impossible. There is also a glut of carrots on the market, the quality being poor and the demand negligible. Asparagus and cucumbers are coming forward from Canterbury. Satisfactory prices are being realised. Market Prices The rates ruling at the end of this week in Dunedin were— Apples: Finished for season. Pears: Finished for season. Cherries: Choice, to 3s lb; others, is Gd to 2s lb. Strawberries: Choice, 3s Gd to 5s a punnet; others, 2s 6d a punnet. . Tomatoes: Local, 3s Gd to 4s lb; Christchurch, 3s 2d to 3s 9d lb: Nelson, 2s 9d to 3s 4d lb. Gooseberries: Gd to Is lb. Passion fruit: To 27s Gd a case. Tree tomatoes; To Is 6d lb. Bananas: To arrive. Oranges: To arrive. Lemons: Sold out. Pineapples: To arrive. New potatoes: s£d lb; green peas, Gd to 8d lb; broad beans, 2id to 4d lb; spinach, Is to Is Gd; lettuce, choice to 2s 6d doz., others to Is doz; cauliflower, choice, to 22s 6d a sack, others 4s to 6s a sack; cabbage. 3s to 4s 6d a case. Asparagus, to 21s doz.; cucumbers, 18s to 24s doz.; leeks, to 3d bunch; carrots, choice to 4s sugarbag; white turnips, 2s to 3s doz.; swedes, unsaleable.
