MAYOR’S REPLY

STATEMENTS MADE BY OPPONENT POSITION CLARIFIED “I ask my opponent, Mr Jones, in a friendly way, because I have no grudge against anyone, not to misconstrue my statements and give them a meaning which was never intended,” said the Mayor, Mr Cameron, speaking at Caversham last night. “I have seen in the newspapers recently that ‘Labour wants an answer.’ Well, I have that answer.” Mr Cameron said that Mr Jones had taken the statement that he, Mr Cameron, wanted a good team to work with on the council and added to it that this meant he could work with only a Citizens council. “ I have never made such a statement and _ I contradict it most emphatically,” said Mr Camdron. “ I have been on friendly terms with all the councillors during the last three years, but I recently asked that this time I should have with me 12 councillors who will accept full responsibility and do their shaie of the work,” said Mr Cameron. “Who those 12 councillors will be is for the electors to say. I shall be pleased to co-operate with the new council in the best interests of the city,” he added. Another question the Labour Party wanted him to answer was whether he would resign if a Labour council were elected, said Mr Cameron. “ The answer is definitely ‘no i I am not elected to represent the councillors but the people of the city and I will serve the city irrespective of what council is in power,” he said. “Mr Jones says that Mr Cameron would have to resign. Well, Mr Cameron will do nothing of the kind. He will continue to serve the city to the best of his ability,” Mr Cameron concluded.
