PAPER PULP FROM AMERICA LOSS TO GOVERNMENT p.A. WELLINGTON. Nov. 14. Paper pulp supplied by the United States under Lend-Lease during the war was not up to standard, and as a result the Government of New Zealand lost £31,551. This was revealed in the Legislative Council yesterday during the second reading debate of the Appropriation Bill, after Mr T. Bloodworth (Auckland) had asked for an explanation of an item of £31,551 12s 4d, compensation for faulty material supplied, which was written oif as nugatory expenditure. The item dealt with paper pulp supplied by Ihe United Slates under LendLease, and was obtained for the Whakatane Paper Mill, said the Leader of the Council, Mr D. Wilson. The paper was not up to standard, and deteriorated rapidly. The New Zealand Government entered into negotiations with the Whakatane Paper Mill to see that the mill did not pay more than the pulp was worth, and as a result £31.551 had been written ofl. The Government had no remedy from the United States Government ,and it was not right that the Whakatane Mill should bear the full loss.
