MISSING DEFENDANT WARRANT ISSUED FOR ARREST P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 13. An order for the issue of a warrant for the arrest of Charles Eric Holden Hamerton, aged 47, described as a journalist, was made to-day in the Supreme Court by Mr Justice Gresson. When Hamerton failed to appear to-day for trial on false pretences charges, Mr W. R. Birks, for the Crown, said that counsel who had acted in the lower court had surrendered the brief. Hamerton had failed to keep in touch with his bondsman as promised, and his present whereabouts was unknown.
Although, Mr Birks said, he knew that the bondsman had gone to considerable trouble to keep the accused available for trial he had no alternative but to ask that the surety of £SO entered into on the accused’s behalf be estreated, The bondsman could apply to the court subsequently to have the matter of his recognisance considered further. His Honor made an order for estreatment, remarking that the rights of the bondsman were completely preserved.
