SERIOUS POSITION
FEDERAL DOLLAR BALANCE HEAVY PETROL CUTS EXPECTED CANBERRA. Nov. 13 The Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, who is given to understatement, is reported to have said: “The position is so serious that we might not have dollars to provide for industries at present regarded as fundamental. The impending results of this and the Cabinet meeting to-day are stated to be further cuts in petrol consumption. which will virtually eliminate private motoring, the disappearance of American cars from Australian imports except for a few special needs, anr* further cuts in American films The dollar position outlined to Cabinet is understood to be far graver than the most pessimistic forecast. Correspondents say that Labour members have been informed of a heavy pertol cut, which will probably operate from February Arrangements are being contemplated to switch the body-building industry in Australia almost exclusively to vans and trucks.
