MEETING IN BRUSSELS

EUROPEAN CUSTOMS UNION PROBLEMS DOMINION OBSERVER PRESENT N.Z.P.A, Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 12. Wing Commander A. A. N. Breckon, D.F.C.j is representing New Zealand as an observer at the conference of 22 countries at present meeting in Brussels to examine the problems involved in the formation of a European Customs union. Countries represented by delegations are the United Kingdom. Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Austria. Portugal, France, Eire, Denmark, Iceland, and Switzerland. Those represented by observers are Norway, Sweden, Canada, Australia. New Zealand, Pakistan, India, and South Africa. On the proposal of the British delegation, Herr D. P. Spierenburg (the Netherlands) was elected, chairman of the 'conference.

Performing the official opening ceremony, the Belgian Prime Minister, M. Spaak, expressed disappointment that not all the countries. invited had accepted the invitations. The conference would not easily reach a decision, but the difficult world situation shouid sitmulate delegates to do so. It was time to adopt new methods for the situation of Europe.
