SWEPT OVER RAPIDS
BULLER RIVER TRAGEDY HOTELKEEPER DROWNED P.A. NELSON, Nov. 12. The proprietor of the Newton Flat Hotel, Mr T. Mooney, was drowned in the Builer River last evening when he was crossing the river in a boat with a load of venison. Mr Mooney was with Constables Williams and Marshall, of Westport, when one of the party shot a deer across the river near the hotel, which is 13 miles down the Builer from Murchison. Mr Mooney and Constable Marshall rowed across and cut up the deer. While. Mr Mooney was returning alone in the boat with some of the venison and a dog, he lost one of the rowlocks. The boat spun around, and before Mr Mooney could regain control he was carried over the rapids further down the river. A search was conducted last evening and today, but no trace was found of either Mr Mooney or the boat. Pie was a married man with five children. Constable Marshall was marooned on the other side, of the river, and spent the night in the open.
