AN ANONYMOUS THREAT

Sir,—lt is over two score years since I came to live at “ Tolcarne.” My home always seems to have been in the bush—then Tolcarne avenue was laid out. Many beautiful homes have been built in the immediate vicinity, and my home still remains in the bush. We are from time to time inundated with rats from the bush and the human rats from the town, and so it becomes necessary to have a dog. In the past I have had many dogs—at the present time I have two young pups 17 weeks old, and, like young children, they have to be trained in the way they should go. The night before last one of the pups did bark excessively—that is admitted—but he was chastised for it, grudgingly, of course. Then yesterday afternoon a lady with a soft voice telephoned my office and said, “If Mr Duncan does not stop his dogs from barking poison will be laid.” I just wonder how many of the residents of Tolcarne avenue appreciate my thinking that if poison were laid it would be one of them who was the culprit. At any rate there would be sufficient reason for the police or necessary authorities to consider what inquiries should be made as to who proposed to lay poison. For the benefit of dog lovers, I address my remarks to you, Sir, with apologies for having to do so.—l am, etc., Fred. Geo. Duncan. Dunedin, November 12.
