ALPINE CLUB

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of members of the Otago section of the New Zealand Alpine Club was held in the University Club rooms on Monday night, Mr J. P. Cook presiding over a large gathering of members and other interested persons. The chairman congratulated the club president, Mr J. A. Sim, on his election to honorary membership of the Alpine Club, London, a distinction held at present by only one other New Zealander. Reference was also made to the death of tour figures well known in alpine circles in this country—Messrs E. A. Duncan, of this city; G. E. Mannering, of Christchurch, one of the founders of the club in 1891; T. C. Fyfe, who led the first ascent of Mount Cook; and William O’Leary (“Arawata Bill "). The lecturer for the evening was Mr G. C. Johnson, assisted by Mrs Johnson and Mr J. R. Johnson. The subject, " Some Climbs from a Continental Viewpoint,” proved to be an unusual presentation of the mythical experiences of a party of New Zealand climbers at an imaginary European alpine resort. The narrative was well supported by caricature sketches portraying a wide diversity of alpine ” types ” and the awkward situations in which those types became involved. The novelty of the entertainment and the excellent manner of its presentation were greatly appreciated by the audience.
