OTAGO CENTRE CARNIVAL FAST TIMES RECORDED Swimming and diving of a high standard were displayed at the opeorng mlerclub carnival of the season, held by t c Otago Swimming Centre at the Municipa Baths last night before a fair crowd oj Spectators The competitors included many of New Zealand’s foremost performers 01 and Miss Ngaire Lane, the national women’s backstroke champion who had a good win in the 100 Yards Inter club Backstroke Handicap > nl3 ' ssec ; eot within 1 l-ssec of her Dominion re cord in spite of the fact that she won CO Mi f s°s rt ßetty Casey, the national women’: freestyle champion, who was making he. first appearance for the Kiwi Club sine transferring from Wellington, had a mos successful meeting. She swam into sec ond place in the 220 Yards In v Freestyle Handicap, wmch was won bj the Dunedin club intermediate. S. Williams, in 2min 48 3-ssec, Miss Casey benif timed in 2min 50sec, while she won the 100 Yards Women s Freestyle Handical from scratch in 68 l-ssec. W. J. Jarvis (University), the New Zeu land medley champion and former freestyle titleholder, won the 100 Yards mterclub Breaststroke Handicap fron scratch in 77 l-ssec, and also performec well in freestyle and backstroke events T. E. Wilson (Dunedin) showed excellent form in winning the 100 Yards Interclul Freestyle in 61 l-ssec, and the New Zealand men’s and women’s diving chain pions, J. Stewart (Kiwi) and Miss M. Reic (Dunedin), filled the first two places u the interclub diving handicap, both giving polished displays. Subsequently Stewart and his clubmate, V. Eckhofl gave a spectacular exhibition.
