PACIFIC SCIENCE CONGRESS

GRANT BY GOVERNMENT The Government has made a grant of £IO,OOO towards the expense of holding the Pacific' Science Congress in New Zealand. This advice was given by the retiring president, Dr H. D, Skinner, at the annual meeting of the Otago branch of the Royal Society held in the Museum last night. The date and venue of the congress have not yet been decided upon. The following officers were elected for the. ensuing year:—President, Dr Basil H. Howard; vice-presidents, Drs H. D. Skinner and G. T. S. Baylis; secretary, Mr J. B. Mackie; treasurer, Mr H. S. Tiley; auditor, Mr J. G. Butler; solicitor, Mr J. M. Paterson; council— Dr G. J. Williams, Miss B. Brewer, Messrs E. Garden and J. S. Coombs; representative on Council of Royal Society, Dr C. M. Focken. Dr Williams was nominated for election next year as a representative on the Dominion Council.

An informal talk was given by Dr Skinner on a collection of articles sent to the Otago Museum by Dr Lindsay Rogers, a New Zealand scientist engaged in research work at Baghdad. The pieces included utensils, trinkets and relics of statuary from the Nile Valley, Sumeria, and archaeological remains in the. Near and Middle East.
