WAR-TIME AUSTERITY
LORD MAYOR’S BANQUET
LONDON, Nov. 10.
The Lord Mayor’s banquet, worldfamous before the war for its splendour, retreated this year to full wartime austerity. There were 325 guests in the Mansion House instead of the 1000 usual at the Guildhall.
With the Food Minister, Mr John Strachey, at the top table there was only one main course—turkey with roast or boiled potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The Mansion House contrived to continue, the tradition of featuring turtle soup. The sweet was trifle with ice-cream, and there were pastries. Drink was less restricted, the guests being offered sherry, champagne, brandy, port wine, and whisky. The banquet followed the Lord Mayor’s Show, which included 19 tableaux designed to show the importance of agriculture to London and all of Britain.
