BILL TO PROCEED
CONTROL OF BANKING
MR CHIFLEY’S INTENTIONS
UNDAUNTED BY STATE ACTIONS
Rec. 11 p.m. CANBERRA, Nov. 11. Legislative or political action in any State would not affect the Federal Government’s decision to proceed with the Bank Nationalisation Bill, said the Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifley, in the House
of Representatives to-day. He was answering the Leader of .the Opposition, Mr R. G. Menzies, who asked whether, in view of the overwhelming expression of opinion against banking monopoly legislation recorded by the electors of Victoria, the Federal Government would either abandon the Bill or defer consideration until a referendum or general election had been held.
Mr Chifley said he had previously indicated that it was not the Government’s intention to hold a referendum. The Government believed that the powers under the Constitution gave Parliament power to pass its banking legislation.
