Attractive Centennial Stamp “ The outstanding one of the series,” is the description applied by Mr P. G. Connolly. M.P., to the centennial stamp showing First Church as part of the design. This opinion was expressed after Mr Connolly had inspected proofs of the stamps in Wellington. It will be recalled that it was not at first proposed to use the First Church design. It was. however, iater substituted for another which had been chosen but was later, for technical reasons, found to be unsuitable.

Party of Tourists The first touring party from Australia for some years arrived in Dunedin from the north yesterday afternoon. The tourists have come from all parts of the Commonwealth and are looking forward to seeing most of the province’s scenic attractions before leaving. v

Subsidy on Centennial Funds In a message to the Daily Times from Wellington, Mr P. G. Connolly, M.P., states that he is in a position to confirm an earlier announcement that the Supplementary Estimates would make provision for a subsidy of £20.000 to the Otago Centennial Association. This amount is additional to a sum of £IO.OOO voted in the main estimates.

More than 43,000 meat coupons, saved by members of Seventh-day Adventist Churches in the South Island, have been handed to the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr E. H. Andrews. The presentation of the coupons was made by Pastor A. R. Mitchell, president ot the South New Zealand Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. It was stated that at the conservative estimate of 3d each, these coupons represented meat to the value of £540, but the large number of H coupons included would increase the value considerably Dunedin Adventists contributed 1692 coupons.

Unsightly Hoardings “ Some early members of the association sallied out into the country with axes and enthusiastically chopped down these offending hoardings,” said Mr P, W. Breen at the meeting of the Otago Automobile Association last night. “They were duly prosecuted.” Mr W. J. McInnes said that the association had been trying to get some action on the matter for years, the biggest offender being the Railways Department. “Town-planning organisations havr taken action in England,” said Mr Breen. “Hoardings are all right in the proper place, but not in the country.” Mother Wins £25,000 Not knowing what else to give as a birthday present, Eric Judson, aged 174, bought his mother, Mrs A. W Judson. of Camberwell road, Hawera. a ticket in an Australian lottery on the Melbourne Cup. The ticket brought Mrs Judson a prize of £25.000. Mrs Judson first heard the news of her good fortune from a Hawera Post Office official. She suspected that his telephone call might be a joke, so her husband went to the Post Office to make sure. “I just trembled,” said Mrs Judson, in describing her reaction to the news. “Of course. I could not believe it, and it still seems hard to understand.” When Eric Judson bought the ticket on September 9 he also took a share in another ticket with a workmate. This ticket was next to the one held by his mother.
