QUEENSTOWN Borough Council Meeting The monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council was held on Friday, the Mayor (Dr W, A. Anderson) presiding. Matters of interest brought before the meeting consisted of the purchase of a flame-thrower for the destruction of weeds. The Public Works Department notified that a vote of £27 on a £3 for £1 basis had been set aside for portion of the Queenstown-Pembroke main highway. The sum of £1 Is was granted to the Air Force Queen Fund. Eighteen retailers in the town sent in a petition protecting against legislation Involving a reduction in the trading hours of shops in Queenstown. The petition was upheld, and it was decided that the member for the district and the Prime Minister would be written to. An application to make alterations and additions to the shop of D. W. Thompson, in Rees and Beach streets, was refused unless the owner set his premises back 30 feet from the middle of the roadway The Works Committee reported that several improvements were to be made to the new camping ground at Mackenzie’s which had been recently acquired by the council. It was decided to secure the services of Mr D. Tannock, of Dunedin, in laying out the grounds. The electrical engineer reported that both plants were functioning satisfactorily. The Finance Committee reported that there was a shortage in the sewerage loan account when all debits had been taken into consideration.—lt was - decided to dispose of some of the plant and timber used In the drainage work and also to ask for a reduction in the engineer's charges, Lake County Council

The monthly meeting of the Lake, County Council was held on Thursday, and was presided over by Mr D. H. Cockburn (chairman). Several letters were received from the resident engineer, PublicWorks Department at Alexandra, advising that no items appeared on the Estimates for bridges on highways under the council’s control and that it was considered that in the present conditions certain bridges were not of sufficient national importance to warrant expenditure.—lt was decided to ascertain the charges and to ask the Government/to compensate the council. The public works engineer informed the council that all sheet piling being taken out of the river bn Skippers, Ltd., claim was required in Canterbury, and no reservation could be made for Lake County. It was reported by the clerk that steps had been taken to protect the council's interests in regard to payment of rates owing by the company. The Public Works Department furnished details of amounts approved for road maintenance as follows: —QueenstownPembroke, via Arrowtown. £1896; Queens-berry-Pembroke, £382; .Arrowtown to junction with No. 64 S.H., £245; Skippers highway, £637; Glenorchy-Paradise, £700; Pembroke-Haast, £225. The' Director of National Service stated that No. 118 area would comprise the boroughs of Alexandra, Cromwell, Arrowtown. Queenstown, and Naseby. with the counties of Mamototo. Vincent and Lake. In connection with a circular from the Dunedin Centre regarding the reclamation of waste material, it was decided to ask the patriotic sub-committees to undertake the work. Several local bodies in Southland had approved of the principle of meeting capital expenditure Incurred by the Southland Hospital Board by way of loan instead of a direct levy on local bodies. Several ratepayers in Cardrona R.ding offered to give free labour for the purpose of assistance in the erection of ondges on the main highway. The clerk was asked to thank the ratepayers and to give reasons for delay in proceeding with the worK. Objections were received from three ratepayers to borrowing money for rural housing. The council issued a statement that housing was as essential in rural as In urban areas, and that every step would be taken to protect the council in regard to the securities A request from C. D. Hume, part Valley. to make repairs to the road from Rees bridge to the old Paradise road down the property owned by C. Harries was referred to the member for the riding. In response to an appeal from the New Zealand Counties Association it was decided to contribute the sum of £lO towards the distress of people in the bombed areas in England. The chairman reported that as a result of a visit to Wanaka, agreement had been made with Mr Sargood’s manager to remove portions of the willow wall or groin in the Cardrona River, which was menacing the main highway. Accounts amounting to £297 18s Id. were passed for payment. The debit balance was reported as £1799 17s 2d. New Vicar Inducted

The Rev. Stewart Douglas Millar was inducted into the Wakatipu parish on Friday evening by His Lordship the Bishop of Dunedin. There was a good attendance of church people. The Rev. Millar conducted his first services at Queenstown and Arrowtown on Sunday. Flower Show St, Andrew’s Church held its annual flower show on Thursday last. There was a beautiful display of spring blooms, among which narcissi took pride of place The decorative section was of special merit. Needlework, knitwear, and arts and crafts made a fine show'. The culinary section was not so well represented as usual, but the children’s sections added much interest to the show. The winners of the respective sections were as follows:—Narcissi; Mrs C. H. OMAKAU Patriotic Committee The fortnightly meeting Of the Omakau Sub-district Patriotic Committee was held last Monday, Mr J. M. Mackay presiding. A number of matters in connection with the patriotic campaign were discussed, the main topic being the gala day to be held at Omakau on Labour Day. Arrangements for the programme were discussed, and it was decided to make a special feature of races and competitions for the children, and to hold a dance at night. Arrangements for a concert to-morrow were also discussed, the Alexandra Dramatic Club having offered to produce a two-act play, with additional items to be supplied bv‘local artists. An organisation known as " The Futurists " has also been raising funds for the patriotic effort, and at a recent meeting it was reported that the community sing held at Omakau had resulted In the sum of £3O being raised.
