November 30 December 2. —Feilding J C New Zealand Cup Yogi Is the ruling favourite for the New Zealand Cup. Night Pal Night Pal did not accept for the Churchill Handicap. Capricious It Is reported that P. Spratt will have the mount on Capricious in the Churchill Handicap. Mr L. G. Will His many friends will regret to hear that Mr L G. Hill’s state of health is causing grave anxiety. Pleading The good gallop Pleading put up at Riccarton on Saturday brings him into note for engagements at Wingatui. Silver Streak Silver Streak is amongst those nominated at Gore to race over a mile and aquarter. He is apparently starting another round of farewell performances. Gold Flight When seen yesterday morning Gold Flight looked in good shape after her gallop with Nightcalm. She has apparently wintered well and now is well fprward in condition. The Favourites Doria and Don’t Forget are the ruling favourites for the Air Force Handicap, and The Raker and Winning Rival are more in favour for the Churchill Handicap than Capricious and Passaform. Royal Chief Royal Chief does not seem to be seriously regarded in connection with the Air Force Handicap, but he is not harshly treated and a return to his early speed would make him dangerous at the weights. His work at Riccarton has so far been sprints up to six furlongs. Shikari Some doubt has been expressed about Shikari Seeing out a mile owing to the development of trouble in the respiratory organs. Prince Charlie, one of the most famous roarers in racing history, won the Two Thousand Guineas. He is best known as the sire of Lochiel, one of the best ever raced in Australia and New Zealand. Spanish Lad When spun out yesterday morning over five furlongs, Spanish Lad shaped well He was assisted over the final three furlongs by Desert Maid, who showed a good' turn of speed. Desert Maid should be Well forward in condition, as she sprinted a couple of furlongs at Wingatui prior to the Dunedin winter meeting. Arrivals Arrivals from the south for the Dunedin spring meeting are Spanish Lad, Desert Maid, Gold Flight and Gay Flight. Crack o’ Dawn and Solerity arrived from Waimate. Nightcalm and Damascus arrived last week from Orari. A Wise Move It is a wise move to bring along two-year-olds to Wingatui early in order to give them a chance to get the hang of the going by a couple of mornings’ work prior to the McLean Stakes. Youngsters trained on level ground may get unbalanced when spun out for the first time at Wingatui Ajax Ajax’s win In the Melbourne Stakes brought his total winnings to £39,825, and he Is now only £3175 behind Gloaming who is third on the list of the biggest winners. With some big money to be raced for in the next few months, Ajax, if he goes on the right way. should have no difficulty in passing Gloaming, and has every chance of threatening the second position of Amounis, who has £48.297 to his credit, but he is never likely to challenge Phar Lap’s big total of £66,738. Ebb Tide J. T. Jamieson, trainer of Tidal Wave, won the Derby with Prince Humphrey in 1928. In 1930 his candidate, Sargon, ran fifth, and in 1933, when it seemed he had a great chance with Limarch, that colt had to be withdrawn after giving trouble in his preparation, and Hall, Mark won. That autumn Limarch, still hard to' train, ran a dead heat in the V.R.C St. Leger with the Derby winner, Hall Mark, and beat him in the A.J.C St. Leger. Jamieson’s next Derby attempt was in 1934, when Slpal finished well back In 1937, when Avenger won, Jamieson started Highborn for Mr F. W. Hughes, but the colt was unplaced The next vear Respirator gave him a great hope, but Nuffield and Aeolus beat him. Last year his prospects with High Caste looked bright but Reading barred the way. Old Bill Old Bill was a surprise omission from the list of nominations for the New Zealand Cup. but his connections always plan their races a long way ahead, and the mission that has been specially set for him this season is the Auckland Cup, which will carry the largest stake money of the year, and is often a rather easier race to win than either the New Zealand or Wellington Cups. In the meantime Old Bill is working along in satisfactory style at Awapuni. His next racing will be in welght-for-age events, the Harcourt Stakes. 11 furlongs, at Trentham, and the Canterbury Cup, one mile and a-half. at Riccarton, which will be excellent steps towards his big effort of the term among the handicaopers at Ellerslie Last season Old BUI had only four races, two of which he won before his triumohant bid in the Wellington Centennial Cup Old Bill's part-owner. Mr H, H. Pharazyn who escaped from the Channel Islands just before the German occupation, is now on his way back to New Zealand, so that he should be here before the horse next races. A Bare Double

After Tidal Wave’s win in the Rosehill Guineas, he came into keen demand for the A;J.C. Derby, but he failed in the big event, and thus added another to the long list of horses who have failed to win both races. The double has been accomplished only twice, by Biplane in 1917 and by Phar Lap in 1929. It was thought that Tidal Wave might overcome the " hoodoo this vear. as both races were run on the same course but the Tiderace colt was beaten into fourth place. Among outstanding gallopers to win the Guineas and fall In the Derby were Nigger Minstrel In 192*, Heroic’s Derby: Amounis, 192 a, Manfred’s Derbv; Winalot, 1927. Trivalve s Derby; Molllson. 1928. Prince Humphrey s Derbv: Silver King. 1934. Tbeo’s Derby: Ajax, 1937. Avenger's Derby; Aeolus 19.18, Nuffield’s Derby: and High Caste, 1939, Reading’s Derby Rampion was beaten in the Guineas in 1926 and won. the Derby; Tregilla was second in the Guineas and won the Derby. Allunga after running second to Hadrian in the Guineas, dead-heated in the Derby with Homer in 1935. Talking was beaten by Shakespeare In the 1936 Guineas, and won the Derbv in which Shakespeare fell at the start. In 1919 Artilleryman ran third and Richmond Main unplaced in the Rosehill Guineas to Elfacre: they dead-heated in the Derbv A Valid Gift In the Equity Court (Sydney), Delore Mr Justice Williams, the will of Edwaid Moon, retired jockey, who died in July last vear. was before the court for determination whether one of its clauses constituted a valid charitable bequest. Moon, who for many years had been a wellknown steeplechase and hurdle race rider left an estate of £22,897. He gave part of it (amounting apparently to between £IOOO and £1500) on trust to invest and apply the income for the benefit ol the widow and or children or child of any jockey who may be killed or die from injuries received while riding races in New South Wales or Victoria and who may in the absolute discretion of his executors and trustees be in need of assistance. and in the distribution of such income his trustees were to give to the widows and children of steeplechase and hurdle race jockeys. To this the testator added that if the trust should fail the sum bequeathed therefore should pass to St. Vincent’s Hospitals at Sv&ney and Melbourne Mr Justice Williams held that the bequest constituted a valid charitable gift.

Regal The few investors on Regal in the Methven Cup were rewarded with a rather big dividend. Trotting Cup Dusky Sound. Great Jewel, and Fine Art rank as equal favourites for the Trotting Cup. The Methven Meeting The totalisator turnover at the Methven meeting was £20,867, as against £17,402 10s last year. At Gore Good fields are engaged in the lightharness events to be decided at the Gore meeting. Spangled Maiden The American-bred Spangled Maiden is amongst the nominations for one of the light-harness events to be run at the Timaru meeting. At Timaru Shadow Maid and Surprise Potts, who finished first and second in the Timaru Nursery Handicap in 2rnin 14 2-ssec and 2min 14 4-ssec. are engaged at the Timaru race meeting. At Methven A feature of the racing at Methven was the success attained by South Canterbury trainers. D. Teahen opened the programme with a fine win with Certissimus, while R. W. Townley, jun., won the Cup with Regal. R. Townley was successful in the Avonmore Handicap with Pleasant Guy, and Sabu gave D, Teahen his second win In the Mount Harding Handicap P Gallagher won the Holmes Memorial with Rowi after a good performance, and then rode MacGregor into second place in the Mount Hutt Handicap. It proved a profitable day for followers of South Canterbuiy stables (says the Press). DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING A very pleasing list of acceptances will make up an attractive card for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting, which opens on Saturday. Those that dropped out of the Churchill Handicap include Sparkle, who is reported to have been troubled with her mouth, but she may be seen out on the second day of the meeting Petersham is engaged in the October Handicap, run over a distance deemed more suitable to him Peony Rose has been in work for some time and will probably be kept in reserve for the Gore meeting. Both Sir Hugh and Night Pal are in the October Handicap. An interesting field is engaged in the Air Force Handicap. an aptly-named title, as the field contains some flyers over a sprint distance. Gold Flight, for instance, holds the Wingatui track record for five furlongs at Imin 1 l-ssec when carrying 9.3 in the Hopeful Handicap, run at the Dunedin Cup meeting. With a drop to 7.8, Gold Flight should set a solid pace and will no doubt receive assistance from Don’t Forget. The other end of the field contains well-proven speedsters in Silver Streak, Rebel Mate, Spanish Lad, Nightcalm and the Dunedin Guineas candidate Doria. who was one of the most brilliant two-vear-olds seen out last season At their best, Lord Nuffield and Boswell would lend interest to the race Royal Chief's chance would be assisted by the solid pace sure to be set, and altogether it promises to be a very interesting race One of the best fields that has ever lined up for the race will go to the post for the McLean Stakes, and it may serve to introduce a potential champion or two to the sporting public.

AT WINGATUI A shower of rain fell just before training operations commenced at Wingatui yesterday morning, and it remained cold and somewhat threatening. The outside of the course was open, with the trestles wide out on the track, so that the horses galloped close to the rails. Straightdell and Islay Downs were galloped on the course. The former began at the seven-furlong post and was picked up by his stablemate in the next halffurlong. Straightdell covered seven furlongs in Imin 40 3-ssec, and the last six in Imin 26sec. Both horses finished well. Roseman worked at half pace over two circuits on the sand. Adina reeled off six furlongs on the course in Imin 23 3-ssec. Nightcalm and Gold Flight left five furlongs behind on the course in Imin 10 4-ssec, both finishing well Spanish Lad began at the five-furlong post and picked up Desert Maid at the three-furlong mark. Spanish Lad left his task behind in Imin 9 3-ssec, and the final three in 41 3-ssec. Both the southerners shaped well. Gay Flight cantered on the outside of the course and put in a brief sprint in the straight. Sir Amyas, Milton Abbey and Berrima travelled in company over seven furlongs and finished together. They covered seven furlongs in Imin 39 4-ssec—and the final six in Imin 27sec. The trio were waiting with each other at the finish. Gay Lancer, on the side grass next the rails, galloped six furlongs in Imin 19sec. Chatterbug drew away from Evemary over five furlongs on the course in Imin lOsec. Combat and Strip, on the course, finished together at the end of five furlong? in Imin 12 l-ssec. Taxpayer, on the inside grass, put up 53 2-ssec for half a mile, the last of five furlongs in Imin 3 3-ssec. Night Pal, on the inside, was easing up at the end of five furlongs in Imin 9 3-ssec. Lord Nuffield was trotted several circuits on the inside grass, and seems to be keeping sound. Araboa/ Spearthrust, Irish Colleen, Sir Hugh and others were also worked during the morning. Crack o’ Dawn (J. Nicholson) was schooled over three flights of hurdles, and shaped well. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club is due to hold its spring meeting early next month. With the Riccarton carnival opening a week later, it has developed into an important fixture. According to a recent report, the course at Motukarara was very soft, due not so much to rain as to the influence of the nearby lake. There has been an improvement in the past week, and those well qualified to judge the conditions are definite in the opinion that the track will be in very good order by the end of this month. This is good news, as a number of Riccarton horses are likely to be reserved for a race at Motukarara before competing at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Grey Night has come on in the last week or two, a sprint a few days ago being evidence that he has lost none of his brilliant speed. Unfortunately, he is not a sound horse, and lie will be reserved for engagements at Riccarton. His three-year-old half-brother, Big Game, by Friday Night, is also making good progress and he shapes like being more thgn a useful performer. He will have a race at Motukarara before taking oh novice events at Riccarton,

Knight Commander nas done a lot of good work since he came in after a spell. He has had a few smart gallops lately, and he will be at his best In a few weeks. He lias been nominated for the sprint event at the South Canterbury meeting next week, and though the distance will be too short to show hyn at his best, the benefit of a race will probably be seen afterwards.

Although Mungatoon has been nominated for the hurdle race at the South Canterbury meeting, it is far from certain that he will make his first appearance as a jumper next week. He has another engagement, being one of the Riccarton candidates for the Teschemaker Handicap, the chief event on the programme. Blue Coat has made great progress in the last few weeks. He has always had plenty of speed, and now he looks as if he was on the way to being a solid racing prospect. His stable mate, Lord Kinnouil, has been shaping well in his work. These two are booked to accompany Density to Washdyke, where the brilliant sprinter will have her first outing for the season.

C. Dawson has a well-grown two-year-old under his care. He is a half-brother to the useful Stabilise, being by Salmagundi from Stability. He looks as if he would be a good horse, but he is not being hurried, there being no intention of racing him until the autumn. There was another unwelcome change in the weather late yesterday, when rain set in, developing into a downpour which lasted all through the night. It cleared olf early this morning, but Riccarton received such a soaking that the racecourse gates were not opened before breakfast Some of the trainers put in an appearance after the interval, but others were com tent to send their horses out for road exercise. Those who visited the course had the sand track available, but It was very slushy. . , .. The No. 1 grass track was open for the use of horses booked to travel to Wingatui to-morrow. , . , Glenora Boy and Sir Frederick went on it, striding over seven furlongs at a sound pace. . . Most of the horses who are to race at the Dunedin meeting will leave here on Thursday, and the grass track will be available for them to-morrow.

SOUTHERN TRACKS SAILING LADY IN FORM (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 8. A good mile by Sailing Lady and a smart five furlongs by Susie and Filibeg were perhaps the only bright features oi the trials at Invercargill this morning. The weather was cold and overcast and the heavy rain throughout the night made the going dead. All the fast work was done on the No 1 grass. Sir Denis and Eire s Rum just shadeo Doubleack at the end of a mile, but there was not much pace on at any stage, the full journey taking Imin 55sec, and the last four 58 2-ssec. Melodist ran four furlongs comfortably in 57 2-ssec. and had the three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Cough to assist her over the last two. Melodist was making a coughing noise after her gallop and it looks as if she is in for a cold. Five of her stablemates have the complaint. , , ~. , Navua and the four-year-old gelding by Paladin from Sweet Memory hit out fre civ when covering six furlongs in Imin 23sec. The Paladin gelding is making noticeable improvement with every gallop Sailing Lady was again responsible for the best effort of the morning when she left a mile behind in Imin 49 2-ssec. She was joined bv Erin's Star at the end of two furlongs, and they ran the last six in Imin 21 2-ssec, and the last four In 55 l-ssec. Sailing Lady was doing her work well all the way and finished under a strong hold. It was an excellent effort in the dead going, and she will be in good forward order for her engagement on the second day of the Dunedin meeting Filibeg and Susie beat Mona’s Song over five furlongs in the good time for the track of Imin 6sec. Both Filibeg and Susie ran the last four in 52sec, and finished with great dash. Filibeg is being tried out with a new bit to prevent him boring. and it worked satisfactorily this morning. as he came home very straight. Mona’s Song did not appear to be too happy in the going. . Wild Career and Southern Light ran three furlongs under a nice hold in 41 3-ssec, and Blissful Lady and Princess Gainsborough were not extended to run half a mile in 55 2-ssec. Blissful Ladv was in poor condition when she came in from her spell in the paddock, but she is picking up fast and may be readv for racing at Gore this month. Milford, Sparkle and Erinview were restricted to pace work. Milford was schooled yesterday over four hurdles. He slipped into one of the hurdles and took a long roll, but he took no harm from the fall and it was the only mistake he made. Sparkle has been withdrawn from her two engagements on the first day at the Dunedin meeting, and her part-owner and trainer. Mr W E Hazlett, stated this morning that she was a very unlikely starter at the meeting. She looks well, but she has had a fairly easy time of it during the oast tew days owing to the abscess in her mouth. The abscess was lanced yesterday and she will be all right from now on,

Erinview (Colonel Cygnus—Wild Erint has gone shin sore in one leg, and she will not be raced at the Dunedin meeting.

Spanish Lad, Desert Maid. Gold Flight, and Gay Flight left for Wingatui during the week-end, and there was nothing of note to record in connection with the track work at Riverton this morning. The Man’s Pal—Set Sail filly, who has an engagement in the McLean Stakes, has been named Southern Wave. Two more two-year-olds from Mr W. E Hazlett’s large siring of youngsters made their appearance on the track this morning. They were fillies by Colonel Cygnus from Moulin Rouge and Slanther respectively, and both are nicely grown. The one from Moulin Rouge—a bay—is a halfsister to Latin Quarter and Frenchy, and a full-sister to Colonel Rouge, and the other—a chestnut—is a half-sister to Burwood The two-year-old gelding Chandelier (Salmagundi—Brightmark), who was responsible for a most impressive effort over two furlongs at headquarters on Saturday was withdrawn from the McLean Stakes, and he will probably be turned out later The youngster was shaken upwith the whip in his sprint, but was quite unconcerned over the whole business, and he is undoubtedly a good advertisement for his sire.

Wild Career is to make his first appearance of the season at the Gore meeting this month, and he may be taken to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup meeting. The Balboa gelding ran one of the best races of his career on tire northern course when he went under to Great Star by a head in the Cressy Handicap (one mile), in the fast time of Imin 38 3-ssec. He was four years old then, and is now in his eighth year, but his appearance since being put into work after a very beneficial spell suggests that he will con tinue his career on the turf for a good while yet. Wild Career won two races last season, including the Riverton Cup. in record time, and was in a minor place no fewer than eight times, while his stake winnings for that period amounted to £BOO.

Commenting on the Metropolitan, the Telegraph says: “Beau Vite’s win was the most spectacular high-weight performance since Laddie Blue scored with 10.7 in 1921. Making light of his welter weight, Beau Vite dashed away at the start as though he was In a sprint race, and won in a runaway fashion.” The Herald says; “ New Zealand-bred horses secured a notable triumph in winning the Epsom-Metropolitan double." Following Beau Vite’s win, his owner refused an offer of 10,000gns for the horse. Beau Vite is now a clear-cut favourite for the Melbourne Cup. As a result of public rumours and conjecture at the week-end with regard to the Beaulivre incident in the Epsom Handicap, the A.J.C. stewards to-day further questioned the owner, Mr Harnett, who assured the stewards that he was a heavy loser, and produced betting tickets and vouchers revealing that he had backed Beaulivre to win many thousands straight out and in doubles. The stewards also heard evidence from the New Zealand jockey Ellis as to Beaulivre's running in the Metropolitan to-day, and reported that Ellis declared that Beaulivre could not have won even had the race been a mile.
