CHORAL SOCIETY
CONCERT FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS Since there has, broadly speaking, been a dearth of musical events in Dunedin following on the Centennial Festival held in May last, many people will be pleased to learn that, as a contribution to the Navy Queen’s campaign in the Queen Carnival events, the Choral Society is to stage a special concert in the Town Hall on Tuesday, October 22. A fine group of soloists is being assembled for the occasion. For example, in the selection of excerpts from Sir Edward Elgar’s cantata " Caractacus,” which will constitute a feature of the programme. Miss Anita Proctor, Mr James Hinton and Mr Russell Laurenson will appear. The glowing, exciting “Prince Igor " music is also on the programme. As well as Cesar Franck’s “ Xsoth Psalm " and a number of part songs, in one of which Miss Ivy Harman is to be the soloist. Nor Is instrumental music to be neglected, for that very fine and popular voung pianist Miss Mavis Macdonald will take the solo part in Beethoven's joyous “ Choral Fantasia," one of the most popular works which the society has introduced during the last few years. Mr Alfred Walmsley will be in his usual place on the conductor’s stand, and besides the choir, which is in great form at present, he will have under his baton a full orchestra to be led by Miss Ethel Wallace. To make the evening complete there is to be the appearance of the Navy Queen herself. Miss Jessie McLennan, who is to speak the noble and inspiring epilogue to " Caractacus." Box plan arrangements for the concert will be found advertised elsewhere in this issue.
