A meeting of the Upper Clutha State Primary School Sports Association was held recently. The main business of the meeting was to fix a date for the annual sports meeting, and after discussion it was decided to co-operate with the local Patriotic Committee and to hold the annual sports on Labour Day in conjunction with the patriotic carnival at Wanaka. LAWRENCE Anniversary Church Services The seventy-sixth anniversary services connected with the Lawrence-Beaumont Presbyterian Church was celebrated last Sunday. The Rev. C. J. Tocker, of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Invercargill, was the preacher for the day. Eloquent addresses befitting the occasion were delivered at all the services to good attendances. An anthem was rendered by the junior choir at the morning service and by the senior choir at the evening service. Mrs Hagland sang the solo “ Eternal Father.” The special collection for the day was on behalf of the Centennial Fund of the New Zealand Presbyterian Church, and amounted to £l3O. The total amount contributed to this fund by the congregation has reached £7oo—which is £IOO more than it was estimated it would be able to contribute.
High School Committee The monthly meeting of the Lawrence District High School Committee was held last Friday night, the chairman (Mr F. J. Gray) presiding. Accounts totalling £9 13s 3d were passed for payment. Mr E. J. Aimers reported having visited the school during the month and having found the grounds in good order. It was decided to have four broken windows repaired at once. An offer of Mr W Allen to purchase between 20 and 30 posts was accepted. Messrs Gray and Bartlett were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. Prior to the committee meeting a meeting of householders was held to elect one member in place of Mr D. Christie. The only nominee was Mr C. A. Grieg. Before closing this meeting, the chairman extended a welcome back to Lawrence to Mr G. H. Bowie, who had just returned from a year in England, where he had been furthering u.s studies.
Primary, Schools’ Sports The annual meeting of the South Tuapeka State Primary Schools’ Sports Subassociation was held in the Lawrence School on Friday night. The balance sheet, which was adopted, showed a credit balance of over £7, more than £1 10s profit being shown on the year’s working. The election o', officers for the ensuing year resulted:—President, Mr F. J. Gray; vice-presidents, Messrs B. O. Gumming and E. M. Stevens; secretary-trea-surer, Mr G. H. Bowie. The committee will be nominated from the various school committees and teaching staffs as in previous years. Owing to petrol restrictions, it was found impossible to hold the annual sports meeting at the usual time, and it was decided to inquire from the various schools if arrangements could be made to hold the sports cither in November or February. RANFURLY Goir The Maniototo Golf Club concluded its competitions for the season on Saturday with the second round of the aggregate competition in conjunction with a Medal Handicap. A. H. Macdonald, with a score of 152, was the winner, followed by R. Knight 153, R. A. Long 154, R. Jamieson 158, A. McLean 159. The Medal Round was woji by R. A. Long 83—10—73, A. Macdonald 84 —10—74. R. Knight 106 —30— 76. During the week-end a match was played with the Ardleigh Golf Club (Palmerston). Conditions were good, and the results were as follows (Ardleigh names first);—G. Thomson lost to R. A. Long, 6 and 5; S. Heckler lost to Dr Kidd, 4 and 2: H. Wooding lost to A. Macdonald, 2 and 1; H, North lost to Dr Eudey, 5 and 4; A. Cochran lost to R. Jamieson. 2 and 1; R. Hudson lost to A. Rawlinson, 3 and 2; Dr Hav beat I. Anderson, 2 and 1; A. Heckler beat J. Tansley, 2 and 1; J. Mann beat I. Fraser. 2 up; J. Challis beat A. McLean, 4 and 3: J. Preston beat G. Wilson. 5 and 4: Crockett beat Knight, 4 and 2. The results of the Foursome were as follows:—Thomson and Heckler lost to Long and Kidd. 7 and 5; Wooding and North lost to Macdonald and Eudey, 3 and 2; Cochran and Hudson lost to Jamieson and Rawlinson. 4 and 2; Hav and A. Other scores were: Dr Hay 19—15—34, Jamieson 23—11—34, Long 24 8—32, Anderson 19—12—31, McLean 17— 14—31, Hudson 16—14—30, Rawlinson 19— 11—30. Next Saturday the official closing and pi’esentatlon of trophies will take place, when a Mixed Foursome will be played for the White Cup. The draw will be made at 1.45 p.m. ALEXANDRA Summer Sports Opening On Saturday the various summer sports in Alexandra had their official opening. The bowling clubs of Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell and Bannockburn combined and held only one opening as a means of saving petrol. This year the official opening was held at Alexandra. Concurrent upon this opening the Alexandra Ladies’ Bowling and Croquet Clubs held their usual openings. Alexandra Lawn Tennis and Excelsior Cricket Clubs also held their official openings. Patriotic Effort On Friday the Alexandra Women’s Patriotic Committee held a successful ” bring and buy ” sale, with the result that the Air Force Queen’s fund benefited to the extent of £56. A copper trail yielded the satisfactory amount of £ll 12s 6d. A concert and community sing is to be held on Friday evening, when Mr J. F. Himburg will be the song leader.
