APPEAL FOR £1,000.000 PROVINCIAL COUNCILS’ POWERS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) * WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. ‘‘Whether the moneys are to be sought for each separate purpose of the appeal for £1,000,000 is a matter for the Provincial Patriotic Councils themselves,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) in reply to a question in the House of Representatives to-day. The Government is concerned only in the provision of sterling for such amounts as the National Patriotic Fund Board may desire to remit overseas at the request of the Provincial Councils.” Mr Parry was asked by Mr J. A. Lee (Democratic Labour. Grey Lynn) on behalf of Mr W. E. Barnard (Democratic Labour, Napier), whether the Government would take steps to give effect to a proposal unanimously adopted at a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Provincial Patriotic Committee that the appeal should be divided under three headings—help for the British people, comforts for New Zealand troops, and the rehabilitation of New Zealand soldiers.
