THE BERLIN RAID HEAVY EXPLOSIONS IN CITY LONDON, Oct. 8. (Received Oct. 9, at 2 a.m.) The correspondent of the Associated Press says the R.A.F. raid over Berlin was carried out by seven waves of bombers, some flying so low that they could be seen from the Unter den Linden, over which they dropped dozens of parachute flares. Heavy explosions were heard in the centre of the city, and five fires could be seen blazing simultaneously. The raiders were often caught in searchlights but quickly dived out of sight. It is officially stated that warehouses, railways, two hospitals and a number of private houses were hit. Onq raider was'shot down, AMERICANS IN FAR EAST ADVISED TO EVACUATE SHANGHAI, Oct. 8. (Received Oct. 9, at 2 a.m.) The American State Department has instructed Far Eastern consulates to advise all Americans to evacuate the Japanese Empire, including Korea, and Manchukuo, China, and Hongkong as soon as possible. ITALIAN NAVAL LOSSES ROME, Oct. 8. (Received Oct. 9, at 2 a.m) It is officially stated in Rome that Italy’s naval casualties during September were 63 killed, 60 wounded and 116 missing. EXPECTED IN SPAIN MADRID, Oct. 8. (Received Oct. 9, at 2 a.m.) Herr Himmler and Marshal de Bono are expected in Spain within a few days. FRENCH GENERALS RETIRED HANOI, Oct. 8. (Received Oct. 9, at 2 a.m.) It is authoritatively stated that the Vichy Government is retiring all five French generals in Indo-China. Their successors will arrive via the United States. The new age retirement ruling is responsible for this action.
